Have you been told that having a blog on your website is all you need for optimal search engine optimization? Have you heard that a dental practice blog is simply a waste of time? Well, we’re going to play a little game of Myth Busters today. I want to share with you the top five reasons that you need not just any blog, but you need an MDPM blog.
1) To increase your odds for placement on SERPs by having multiple domains
According to SearchEngineOptimizationJournal.com, “Google will only allow one page from the same domain to rank for the same keyword.” What this means is, if you want to have the top few listings for a keyword phrase, multiple websites will help. The article goes on to say, “The more websites you have, the more chances you have of attracting sales. It means more opportunities for you to earn the income you want.”
For instance, Google “sedation dentist Wilkes Barre” and you’ll see that our client, Back Mountain Dental, appears as A on the map, then further down on the first page, their blog, sedationdentistwilkesbarre.com, ranks fourth. Out of the 15 listings on page one of Google, Back Mountain Dental shows up twice.
2) Because blogs are considered news and website text isn’t
Blogs are considered news by Google, so original blog posts with good content can rank higher than similar content on a website. Other factors come into play, like the age of the content, its length, backlinks to the content, etc. For more on this topic, check out Google Caffeine.
3) Because backlinks to your main website will boost THAT SITE’s SERP ranking
A backlink is a link to your website from another website. By having your blog on its own domain, separate from your website, when we link keywords within blog posts to related pages on your website, your website is credited with backlinks. For ranking websites on search engine results pages (SERPs), Google places great importance on the number and quality of backlinks to your website. If your blog were a page on your website, the links from blog posts to your website pages would be considered internal links, and they will not have near the impact on SERPs placement as back links.
Here’s an example, Google “cosmetic dentist Chicago.” Chicago Smile Spa comes up as the third map entry. The blog we write for this client does not show up on page one. However, her main website did not appear on page one until we began the blog, which includes backlinks to her website. The backlinks pushed her main site’s listing to the top of page one.
